Discovering your core values doesn’t have to be a long or difficult process.
In fact, this is a potentially life-changing exercise that you can complete in just a few minutes!
By following the instructions below, you will create a solid list of values that will help you to experience fulfilment, clarity and focus in both your personal and professional life.
Your values will help you to make better decisions and live a life that is authentic and true to you.
All you need is a pen, paper and a quiet space.

Writing your list of Core Values
Read all of the following text before you start writing.
- First, take a moment to clear your mind and relax in a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.
- Then start writing a list of the things in your life that you feel are most important to you.
- Keep writing until you run out of words that feel right.
- To help you build your list, consider the following:
What do you spend most of your time doing?
When are you happiest?
What type of films/programmes do you like to watch?
What would you love to do all day?
What makes you proud?
What things are in your environment (home, office, car)?
What’s your passion?
What makes you feel fulfilled?
What are you best known for?
What would you like to be remembered for?
If you need some ideas, use this list of values but don’t let them take over what you feel is right for you. - Next, group your values into similar categories. You should have a minimum of five categories and no more than ten.
For example, you might make ‘Adventure’ one category and fill it with other values you’ve chosen, such as Freedom, Fun, Travel, Nature, Independence. - Then find the one value that really stands out and personifies each category.
At this point, you will have still have a long list of values but with a handful that stands out. - In order to make your values actionable add in a verb to create a sentence.
- You should now have between five and ten core values that look something like this.
- Finally, reorder these sentences into a hierarchical list.
Be honest and try and do the exercise quite quickly without thinking too much. It should feel natural. Not forced.
Because you’re here now, you should make your values list now.
But I know you might be reading this quite late at night, so I’ve prepared a pdf of this exercise that you can download for free here.
Next steps…
The next step is really important because it’s going to show you how to get the maximum benefit out of your core values on a day-to-day basis.
