In 2015 my wife and I finished a three-year round the world trip that had been immense.
Yet just a matter of months later, I was a wreck.
Those three years had been care-free and fun loving in every way imaginable.
Until we landed back in the real world.
That year, I turned 40, my wife was pregnant and I had no f*cking idea what I was going to do.
I was broke.
My job gave me zero satisfaction and little to show for it.
Physically I was a mess, too.
My scrawny frame was hunched over.
My posture was horrendous.
I’d also damaged my sacroiliac joint (lower back) and was in agony most days.
But worst of all was the anxiety, depression and the huge gaping hole in my future.
I literally had no idea what to do, where to turn or who to turn to.
But I had to pull my finger out, quick before my son arrived.
I even Googled “What do I want in life?” and “What’s my passion?”
Spoiler Alert!
Google didn’t know.
To make things even worse, I upped my drinking.
Downing a few beers almost every night and maybe a few glasses of wine too.
I thought it was helping.
It blocked everything out.
But I wasn’t getting any closer to a solution.
Then, one day (around 2016) I had an idea.
I was desperate.
I typed “Personal Development” into Google.
I was genuinely afraid.
I remember the trepidation as I hit ‘Enter’.
But…
As I browsed the results, I started picking up on a few things.
A few names, a few courses, a few books, a few ideas.
I actually started to enjoy what I was discovering, and realised that I needed to work on myself.
I hadn’t done any work on myself for decades. If ever.
But what really started moving the needle more quickly were the books I started reading.
There were literally hundreds of books on the subject of personal growth and the content (in some of them) was amazing.
But I had a problem.
I had a newborn to deal with along with a job and everything else that comes with having a new baby in the house.
ie; a gazillion chores.
I had no time to read!
Then I stumbled across Amazon Audible.
Genius!
I started listening to books while I walked to my office or washing the dishes.
I was literally learning on-the-go.
Killing two birds with the proverbial stone.
And the more I listened, the more I wanted to learn.
The books that I found most useful, I then bought physical copies of so I could study them in more detail.
It’s fair to say, that I’ve become pretty obsessed with it.
I’ve now been using Amazon Audible on and off since 2017 and have listened to a ton of books through the app.
Some of them were okay, and some of them have been life-changing!
You can find a list of 28 of my favourite books here, covering personal development, productivity, and money.
