The day I stood in front of a crowded congregation at my mum’s funeral was the day my life changed. Up until that point, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but the epiphany I had whilst standing there changed everything. I knew what I had to do. Simply carry on with what my mum did best. Helping people.
A few months later, Smashing Fifty was born. A brand dedicated to helping busy, middle-aged men get out of a rut, and into the best shape of their lives.
In 2019, as part of my own experimentation with lifestyle change, I gave up drinking alcohol. It wasn’t easy after drinking for more than two decades, but honestly, getting in control of my drinking has been the most powerful thing I have ever done.
Now I’d like to help you to do the same.
Not long after my son was born, I noticed that I was getting easily irritated. I would often be grumpy, my anxiety levels were creeping up again, and most mornings I felt like shit even though I’d only had a few beers the night before.
I wasn’t an alcoholic, but a steady, middle-of-the-road, drinker like most other blokes of my age, knocking back too many beers or too much wine most evenings and weekends without giving it much thought.
Except now I had a child who needed a dad. Didn’t he deserve the best of me?
I was getting tired of always feeling tired. I was getting tired of hating how my body looked in the mirror. Tired of having no time or energy. Tired of feeling guilty for being hungover again.
Where had my zest for life gone?
After one particular heavy session I decided I was going to take a month off drinking.
What! A whole month???
Throughout my entire adult life I’d rarely gone a few days without having a beer, and now I was going to try and take a month off? I thought it was going to be impossible, and the same old fears kicked in.
Except somehow, I did it.
Now I can count the number of drinks I’ve had on one hand since that cold October morning in 2019.
And the best part?
I don’t miss it at all.
Why? Because I’m fully in control, and that makes all the difference.
